Privacy
battlemap-mcp has no accounts, telemetry, or analytics. The mod and the companion talk only to each other, over a local connection on your computer. This page is the practical side; the battlemap-mcp privacy policy is the full statement.
Turn off the update check
Section titled “Turn off the update check”The one internet connection the companion makes is a check for a newer release, at most once a day. To turn it off:
- In Dungeondraft, untick Check for updates under Settings → MCP Bridge. That is the way for the Claude desktop extension and the Claude Code plugin, which have no per-server settings.
- Or set the environment variable
BATTLEMAP_MCP_UPDATE_CHECK=0for your user account, or in your AI client’s settings for this server. A variable that is set takes precedence over the panel.
Files read on your computer
Section titled “Files read on your computer”To find Dungeondraft’s mods and asset folders, the companion reads Dungeondraft’s config.ini. When your assistant searches your asset packs, the companion reads three things from each .dungeondraft_pack in Dungeondraft’s asset folder (or BATTLEMAP_MCP_ASSETS_DIR): its list of files, its pack.json and its tag file. It never reads the art. A pack whose pack.json sets allow_3rd_party_mapping_software_to_read to false is neither searched nor previewed; only its name is listed.
Before working on sensitive maps
Section titled “Before working on sensitive maps”Tool results go to your AI client, which sends them to its model provider as part of the conversation. They can include what is on the map, asset names, file paths (which often include your username), screenshots and exported images. Screenshots and exports can reveal GM notes, secret rooms, and other content you would not want players to see, so check your client’s and provider’s settings first.
Saved images
Section titled “Saved images”Screenshots, exports, and asset previews are also saved on your computer, in mcp_output in battlemap-mcp’s local state folder, or the folder BATTLEMAP_MCP_CAPTURE_DIR names. The companion keeps the newest 20 and deletes older ones automatically.
- To remove them sooner, ask your assistant to use
clear_captures. - To choose how many are kept, set
BATTLEMAP_MCP_CAPTURE_RETENTION(0keeps none).
Deleting local copies does not remove images already sent in a conversation; manage those with your AI client and provider.
