Local operation

battlemap-mcp has no accounts, telemetry, or analytics. The Dungeondraft mod and companion communicate over a local connection on your computer.

Optional update checks

At most once a day, the companion asks GitHub’s API for the latest release version. The request identifies the product but includes no map or installation data. GitHub receives your IP address as part of the connection. Nothing is downloaded or installed automatically.

To disable this check, set BATTLEMAP_MCP_UPDATE_CHECK=0 in your environment or your AI client’s configuration for this server.

What your AI client receives

Tool results can include map elements, positions, text labels, asset names, local file paths, screenshots, and exported images. File paths may include your computer’s username. Map images may reveal GM notes or hidden areas.

These results go to your AI client and may be sent to its model provider as part of your conversation. Review the client’s and provider’s privacy policies and settings before working with sensitive content. A local bridge does not mean your entire AI conversation stays on your computer.

Saved images

Screenshots, exports, and asset previews are also saved locally. By default, the companion keeps the newest 20 and removes older captures. Use clear_captures to remove them sooner, or set BATTLEMAP_MCP_CAPTURE_RETENTION to change the limit; 0 keeps none.

Deleting local images does not delete copies already included in AI conversations. Manage those through your client and provider.
