Forked — Privacy Policy
Effective Date: May 16, 2026
Forked is a recipe discovery app that connects to your self-hosted recipe server. Forked currently supports Mealie, with more servers planned. Your privacy matters — here's exactly what the app does with your data.
Data We Collect
- Server configuration — The hostname/IP and port of your recipe server, stored on your device so the app can sync recipes.
- API token — Your recipe server API authentication token, stored in the iOS Keychain (encrypted, device-only).
- Chef profiles — Dietary preferences, allergies, liked/disliked ingredients that you enter. Stored on your device and optionally synced to your iCloud account if enabled.
- Recipe data — Recipe titles, ingredients, tags, images, and instructions synced from your recipe server and cached locally on your device.
- App preferences — Theme choice, sync interval, last sync time, tip jar state. Stored locally on your device.
- Crash reports — Anonymous crash data (stack traces, device model, OS version) sent to Google Firebase Crashlytics to help us fix bugs. No personal data, recipe content, or server credentials are included in crash reports.
Data We Do Not Collect
- No advertising identifiers
- No location data
- No device fingerprinting
- No personal identifiers (name, email, phone)
- No health data beyond what you voluntarily enter (dietary preferences, and in future releases, nutrition goals)
- No recipe content or server credentials in crash reports
Where Your Data Goes
Your device only. All data stays on your iPhone unless:
- Your recipe server — The app sends API requests to the server address you provide to sync recipes.
- Apple iCloud — Chef profiles sync via iCloud Key-Value Storage when iCloud is enabled. Future features may use iCloud for recipe sync or household sharing. Governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
- iOS share sheet — If you share or export a shopping list, iOS sends the list text only to the destination you choose. Forked does not receive or store the destination account or app.
- Apple StoreKit — Tip jar purchases are processed entirely by Apple. Forked never sees your payment information.
Third-Party Services
Forked does not integrate any advertising or cross-app tracking SDKs. The external services involved are:
- Apple (App Store, StoreKit, iCloud, iOS share sheet)
- Google Firebase Crashlytics — Anonymous crash reporting only. Governed by Google's Privacy Policy. No personal data or recipe content is shared.
- Your recipe server (at the address you configure)
Future releases may add additional services (such as privacy-respecting product analytics or third-party APIs for features like recipe import). When that happens, this policy and the App Store privacy disclosures will be updated before those features ship.
Data Deletion
To delete all Forked data from your device, use Settings → Disconnect & Reset within the app to clear all local data (recipes, preferences, credentials, and cached content), or uninstall the app via Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Forked → Delete App. iCloud-synced chef profiles are removed per Apple's data retention policies (typically within 30 days).
Your Rights
If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with data protection laws, you have the right to:
- Access — request a summary of what data Forked processes about you.
- Deletion — request that your data be erased. Since Forked stores data on your device, you can do this yourself via Settings → Disconnect & Reset or by uninstalling the app.
- Portability — your recipe data originates from your own server and remains accessible there.
- Objection — object to any processing based on legitimate interest. Contact us and we will address your concern.
Forked processes data under the following lawful bases:
- Contract performance — server sync, recipe storage, and shopping list features require processing your data to deliver the service you requested.
- Legitimate interest — anonymous crash reporting helps us maintain app stability. You can disable crash reporting by revoking Forked's analytics permissions in iOS Settings.
